Bradley KuhnExecutive Director and Vice President,
Free Software Foundation Bradley M. Kuhn is a supporter of the Free Software Movement: a movement
that creates software that can be freely copied, shared, modified, and
redistributed, and that brought the popular GNU/Linux operating system
into existence. Mr. Kuhn writes, teaches about and documents Free
Software and advocates the importance of software freedom. He began
working with the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and the GNU project as a
volunteer in the mid-1990s, and was hired by FSF in January 2000. He now
serves as Executive Director of FSF, and recently led the team that
launched FSF's Associate Membership Program.

Bruce PerensOpen Source Advocate
Bruce Perens is best known as the creator of the Open Source Definition, the
canonical definition of Open Source software licensing and the manifesto of the
Open Source movement. He is also founder or co-founder of the Linux Standard
Base, Software in the Public Interest, the Open Source Initiative, and No-Code
International.
His notable Free Software includes "Busybox", a toolkit for building tiny Linux
systems that has become a standard in the embedded systems field. His "Electric
Fence" is a memory allocation debugger that has saved programmers all over the
world hundreds of thousands of hours, and has materially improved the
reliability of software on Unix systems.
Perens is former project leader of the Debian GNU/Linux Distribution, and
contributed much to the development of Debian's software and policies. He
recently left Hewlett Packard, where he had created the corporate Open Source
policy manual and was a founding member of the company's Open Source Review
Board.

Dirk Elmendorf. Dirk is one of the co-founders of Rackspace Managed Hosting

develop and evaluate the new products and services he promotes in his
evangelical role. From December 1997 to December 1998, Dirk was a principal

David Harper joined the Pathogen Group at the Wellcome Trust Sanger
Institute four years ago in a career move which saw him switch from
astronomy to bioinformatics. He survived the initial culture shock
and he has made many useful contributions to the group, who reward
him with chocolate cake.
In his past career, he has evangelised computer algebra software in
British universities, taught mathematics at the University of London,
and worked briefly at the Royal Greenwich Observatory.
For fun, he enjoys stargazing, family history, cats and single-malt
Scotch whisky. Though not all at the same time.
Dr. Ed ZuiderwijkWellcome Trust Sanger Institute
Dutchman Ed Zuiderwijk is a physicist by training who, after spending
some 25 years in observational astronomy, applies what he learnt there
to bio-informatics. An important consideration in making the switch
2.5 years ago was that there is no Nobel Prize for astronomy.
Since his arrival at the Sanger Institute he has worked on the MySQL-based
"Arcturus" database system for the Pathogen Group, building on his
experience with the (Sybase-based) "ING" archive of observations taken
at the La Palma Observatory in the Canaries.
Ed is a keen cyclist and lover of classical music, which includes the
works of Dire Straits. He sometimes walks on air, but never on clogs.

Professor John Hayward earned his PhD from Univeristy of California in
Physics doing a computer simulation of a magnetic system. While doing his
Physics degree he also picked up a Masters in Computer Science. He has
taught Computer Science at Wheaton College for the last 24 years. He has
coached computer programming competitions taking one team the ACM Finals
international competition.
His interests in Computer Science include programming languages, computer

Heikki Tuuri (born 1964 in Helsinki, Finland) holds a PhD degree in
mathematical logic from the University of Helsinki, 1990. During 1988-92 he
held various research and teaching positions at the Dept. of Mathematics.
Heikki Tuuri started his career in database industry in 1992-93 when he was
employed by Solid Information Technology, Ltd, to write an ODBC interface
for the Solid database. During 1993-95 he worked at the Department of
Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, doing research on high
performance database technology.
In 1995 Heikki Tuuri founded Innobase Oy to develop InnoDB, a high
performance transactional database engine. He wrote most of InnoDB code
